Where to Walk in June
In short
June is the month the big hut tours start: the Tour du Mont Blanc from mid-June, Alta Via 1 from late June, and the Laugavegur huts from late June. It is also peak waterfall season on Yosemite's Mist Trail, and the month Scotland's midges begin. Mount Fuji's official season does not start until early July.
June is an opening month, not a peak month
June is when several of the walks people actually mean by “a big trip” change from closed to possible. The Tour du Mont Blanc lists mid-June as the start. Alta Via 1 waits until late June, when the rifugios open and the passes are clear of snow. The Laugavegur huts are staffed from late June. None of these is a walk you begin on 2 June and assume the high line is bare.
June is also when other trips get worse, not better. The West Highland Way is in season from May, and its midges peak from June to August. The Cinque Terre’s good months include May and June, and then summer is hot and crowded. Yosemite’s Mist Trail wants May and June for the waterfalls, so June is the end of the reason to go, not the start.
The month list is on Where to walk in June. If you are still in the Nepal spring, that window is March, and it is closing.
The hut tours that start this month
Tour du Mont Blanc
About 170 km and 10,000 m of ascent around the Mont Blanc massif, through France, Italy and Switzerland. Waymark’s itinerary is seven days, graded hard. Most walkers take 7 to 11 days, sleep in refuges rather than tents, and follow the anti-clockwise loop from the Chamonix valley. There is no technical climbing. The daily ascents are long, and weather at altitude turns quickly.
The listed season is mid-June to mid-September. That sentence is not “any day in June.” A high traverse on the route can hold snow into early summer, and the passes are reliably clear of snow only in high summer. The same page names late June, and the first half of September, as the weeks with the summer weather and fewer people than July and August. July and August are when you book the whole refuge chain before you fly.
If your heart is set on the TMB and your dates are the first week of June, you are early. Read Tour du Mont Blanc or Alta Via 1 before you move the trip to the Dolomites to “save” a week. Alta Via 1 starts even later.
Alta Via 1
Six days, about 120 km, about 6,500 m of ascent, graded hard. A rifugio-to-rifugio line from Lago di Braies, under the walls of Civetta and Pelmo, toward Belluno. The season is late June to September, once the rifugios are open and the high passes are clear of snow.
Early June is not a clever quieter version of this walk. It is before the season the page states. Late June is the first honest week. Book the huts. A Dolomite high route without a bed is not a flexible plan.
The Laugavegur Trail
Four days, about 55 km, about 1,200 m of ascent, graded moderate. From the rhyolite hills and hot springs of Landmannalaugar, over an obsidian plateau and black-sand desert, to the birch woods of Thorsmork. The season is late June to early September, when the mountain huts are staffed and open.
June, for this trail, means the end of June. The grade is the gentle one in this group. The logistics are not gentle if the huts are still shut. Four days across the Icelandic highlands is not a walk you improvise from a camper van when the road is open and the beds are not.
Walks that are good in June, and one that is only in season
Yosemite’s Mist Trail
About 11 km and 880 m, graded hard, a granite staircase in the spray of Vernal Fall and on to Nevada Fall. The listed season for the water is late spring to early summer, May to June. June is the last month the page gives you for peak flow. Go for the water, not for a generic Yosemite day. The valley floor is a different walk, and it is open longer. That choice is Mist Trail or the valley floor.
Cornwall, from St Ives to Land’s End
Three days, about 42 km, about 1,250 m of ascent, graded moderate, on the South West Coast Path around the granite tip of Penwith. The season is April to September, and May to June is named as the best window: cliff flowers and long light.
June is the second of those two best months. It is a coast walk of coves and engine houses, not a hut tour. Three days is a long weekend if you are already in Britain, and a poor substitute for the TMB if the TMB was the actual plan.
The West Highland Way, with midges
Seven days, about 154 km, about 3,155 m of ascent, graded moderate, from Milngavie to Fort William. The season is May to September. Spring and autumn are the quiet months. Midges peak from June to August.
June is legal, listed and inside the insect peak. If you want this path without that peak, May or September is what the page is pointing at. The comparison with a shorter Roman wall is West Highland Way or Hadrian’s Wall.
Snowdon by the Llanberis Path, and the Cinque Terre before the crush
Snowdon, or Yr Wyddfa, by the Llanberis Path is about 14 km and 965 m, graded moderate, May to September. Outside summer it is a winter mountaineering route. June is an ordinary summer day on the longest, most gradual path up, beside the mountain railway, to 1,085 m. It is a day, not a tour. People use it as a test before a hut trek. That ladder is day hikes before a hut trek.
The Blue Trail of the Cinque Terre is about 12 km and 600 m, graded moderate, through the five villages. The page names late spring and early autumn, May to June and September to October, and says summer is hot and crowded. June is the last month of the good window, not the start of a summer to lean into.

What is still shut
Mount Fuji by the Yoshida Trail lists an official climbing season from early July to early September. June is before it. Annapurna Base Camp says to avoid the June to September monsoon. The Inca Trail is in its dry season from May, so June is fine there, but that is a permit problem measured in months, not a walk you decide in the departure lounge. July, not June, is the month Fuji joins this list: Where to walk in July.
Questions
- Can you walk the Tour du Mont Blanc in June?
- The listed season starts in mid-June and runs to mid-September. High traverses can hold snow into early summer, and the passes are reliably clear only in high summer. Late June is the quieter start the route page itself suggests.
- Is June too early for Alta Via 1?
- The season is late June to September, once the rifugios are open and the high passes are clear of snow. Early June is before that window. Late June is the start of it.
- When do the Laugavegur huts open?
- Waymark lists late June to early September, the weeks the mountain huts are staffed. The trail is four days, about 55 km and 1,200 m of ascent, graded moderate.
- Is June a good month on the West Highland Way?
- The Way is listed May to September. Spring and autumn are the quiet months. Midges peak from June to August, so June is in season and inside the midge peak.
