ICON Park: An Evening Above International Drive

ICON Park is not a theme park and does not pretend to be one. It is an open-air entertainment complex in the middle of International Drive — a promenade of restaurants, bars and small attractions arranged under one very large landmark: The Wheel, the 120-meter observation wheel that anchors the whole strip and shows up on the skyline from half the hotel balconies in Orlando.

The Wheel is the reason to come. Its capsules are climate-controlled — a real consideration in Florida — and a rotation takes about 20 minutes, long enough to pick out the theme-park skyline piece by piece: the Universal coasters to the north, the Disney sprawl to the southwest, and on a clear day a surprising amount of flat green Florida in between. It is the best free-standing view over the parks, and it is best at sunset, when the day cools and the park lighting comes on below you mid-rotation.

Under the wheel sit the two indoor attractions: Madame Tussauds Orlando, the wax museum where the photos take themselves, and SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium, whose 360-degree ocean tunnel is a genuinely good half hour with children — sharks and rays passing over your head. Around all of it runs the promenade itself: restaurants at every price of ambition, bars, sweets, arcade games, live music on many evenings, all facing International Drive.

How to use it. This is an evening, not a day. The whole complex works best from late afternoon onward: arrive with daylight left, do the aquarium or the wax museum first, ride The Wheel at sunset, then eat on the promenade and let the evening run. Pair it with a theme-park day that ended early, or with an arrival or departure day when you want Orlando without commitment. Combo tickets bundle The Wheel with the attractions beneath it, and the aquarium is a reliable rainy-hour escape if an afternoon thunderstorm rolls through, as they do most summer days.
