Discovery Cove is the anti-Orlando. There are no coasters, no queues and no crowds, because there cannot be any: the park is reservation-only and caps its daily attendance, so however popular it gets, your day never feels like a theme park. It feels like a very good beach resort that happens to contain a coral reef, a tropical river and a lagoon of dolphins.

The deal is all-inclusive and unusually complete. Admission covers breakfast and lunch, unlimited drinks and snacks through the day, a wetsuit or swim vest, snorkel gear, towels, lockers, animal-safe sunscreen and parking. You arrive with a swimsuit and leave your wallet in the car. The one thing that is not automatic is the dolphin swim — it is an optional add-on reserved together with your admission, and it sells out; decide when you book, not when you arrive.

How the day flows. Check in early, have breakfast, claim a spot on the sand and get in the water while the park is at its emptiest. Start at The Grand Reef, the headline habitat: a snorkeling lagoon where rays glide underneath you and thousands of tropical fish work the coral, with sharks on the far side of a glass wall. When you have had your fill, trade fins for the Wind-away River, a warm, winding waterway that circles the park — at one point it flows straight through the aviary, so you drift out of the water into a canopy of free-flying tropical birds that will land on your arm for a cup of feed. The afternoon is for Serenity Bay’s quiet beach, another lap of the reef, and — if you booked it — your scheduled session at Dolphin Lagoon.

The water is heated year-round, which makes even the March and October shoulder weeks comfortable. The park sits on the SeaWorld campus just off the International Drive corridor, directly across the road from its sister park — many visitors pair the two with a multi-park ticket and give Orlando one loud day and one quiet one.

The Wind-away River is a warm, winding waterway that loops the park past waterfalls, rock canyons and an underwater window or two — you swim or drift it rather than tube it. Serenity Bay is the payoff: a quiet, heated freshwater beach with loungers under the palms, built for doing nothing at all. About 90 minutes, or as long as you like.

The best entrance in Orlando: the river flows straight through the aviary, so you drift in from the water into a canopy of free-flying tropical birds — hundreds of them, from finches to toucans. Take a cup of feed from an attendant and the birds will land on your hand and shoulders. You can also walk in on dry land, but arriving by river is the point. About 45 minutes.

The optional headline act: a small-group session in the lagoon with a bottlenose dolphin and a trainer, ending with a short swim alongside the animal. It must be reserved in advance with your admission and runs at a scheduled time, so the rest of your day arranges itself around it. Non-swimmers in your party can watch from the beach.
