Epcot: Around the World in One Very Long Walk

A figure-8 day through Epcot — headline rides in the front half of the park, then eleven country pavilions around the World Showcase Lagoon, ending with the nighttime show over the water.

Epcot is two parks wearing one giant geodesic sphere. The front half is rides and ideas — technology, space, the ocean, the land — organized into the neighborhoods of World Celebration, World Discovery and World Nature. The back half is World Showcase: eleven country pavilions arranged around a lagoon, each built with the architecture, food and staff of its country. The whole thing is laid out like a figure-8 around the World Showcase Lagoon, and walking all of it is the longest park day at Walt Disney World — twelve kilometers is a normal count.

Epcot is also the park of festivals. For much of the year some festival or other is running — Flower & Garden in spring, Food & Wine in the fall — which layers dozens of extra food booths around the lagoon and turns the back half of the park into the best eating on Disney property.

How the day flows. The rides are front-loaded, the food and atmosphere are back-loaded, and the schedule should follow: arrive at opening and go straight to the headliners in World Discovery — Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Test Track — then Soarin’ in World Nature. Ride Spaceship Earth, the slow dark ride inside the sphere itself, on your way past. By late morning, cross into World Showcase and simply walk the lagoon: Mexico through the American pavilion before a late lunch, Japan through Canada in the afternoon, grazing as you go.

Good to know:

The two big World Showcase rides — Frozen Ever After in Norway and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure in France — draw long lines all day; treat them like headliners, not detours.
The nighttime show over the lagoon is visible from almost anywhere on the water’s edge; the bridge between France and the United Kingdom is a favorite spot.
Boats cross the lagoon and skip a lot of walking when your feet give out.
Shade is scarce on the Showcase promenade; hats and water in summer are not optional.

The park opens under Spaceship Earth, the 55-meter geodesic sphere that is Epcot's icon — and it is a ride: a slow, air-conditioned dark ride up through the history of human communication, from cave painting to the space age. The gardens and fountains around it are the park's central spine. Ride the sphere early or late; midday it queues out of proportion to its pace.

The thrill side of the park. Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind is an indoor coaster with rotating cars and a soundtrack, and the ride most worth a pre-opening sprint. Test Track next door puts you in a vehicle you help design, then fires it around an outdoor high-speed loop. Between them, this neighborhood holds most of the park's adrenaline.

The green corner: Soarin' is a hang-gliding simulator that lifts a whole grandstand into a curved screen and remains one of Disney's most beloved rides. The Seas with Nemo & Friends pairs a gentle dark ride with a genuinely large aquarium behind it — manatees, sharks, rays — that most visitors rush past and shouldn't. The Land pavilion's boat ride drifts through real working greenhouses.

Cross into the back half and start the lagoon loop clockwise: Mexico's pyramid with a boat ride and a market inside, Norway with Frozen Ever After — one of the park's two big Showcase rides — then China, Germany and Italy, each built and staffed in character. The American Adventure anchors the far end of the lagoon with an animatronic stage show through US history. Eat your way through; nobody does this stretch hungry twice.

The second half of the loop: Japan's pagoda and department store, Morocco's tiled alleys built by Moroccan artisans, then France — home of Remy's Ratatouille Adventure, the shrink-you-down trackless dark ride, and the best pastry case in the park. The United Kingdom and Canada close the circle. Time it so you hit the lagoon edge at dusk, snack in hand, for the nighttime show over the water.
