Christian holiday
Ascension and Pentecost 2027
Long weekends across Europe on 6 and 16 to 17 May, and the El Rocío pilgrimage in Andalusia.
6 to 17 May 2027
Why people travel then
Pentecost, fifty days after Easter, marks the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles, and Ascension falls ten days earlier. Few people travel for the liturgy itself, but both are public holidays in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, so they make the first long weekends of the walking season.
In Andalusia, Pentecost is the weekend of the Romería del Rocío: around a million pilgrims travel on foot, on horseback and in ox carts to the shrine at El Rocío, and Seville’s Triana brotherhood sets off from its own neighbourhood the Wednesday before.
What you will see on the routes
- Seville Historic Walk: Cathedral, Alcázar and Triana
Cross to Triana around 12 May 2027 to see the Rocío brotherhood’s carts and riders leave for the shrine: the walk’s last stretch is the route they take out of the city.
- The Blue Trail (Sentiero Azzurro) — Five Villages of the Cinque Terre
Mid-May is close to perfect for the Blue Trail, but both long weekends bring day-trippers from across the Alps. Walk early, and check which sections are open on the Cinque Terre park site before you set out.
- The Greenway del Lago di Como — Colonno to Griante
The villas’ gardens are in full bloom in May. On Ascension and Whit weekends the lake ferries are crowded, so walk the Greenway and use the boat for one leg only.
- Hallstatt & the Dachstein — Lake, Salt Mine and Ice Cave
Whit Monday is a holiday in Austria and Hallstatt is at its busiest. The Dachstein cable car and ice cave usually reopen in May, but check the operator’s calendar before planning around them.
How it changes travel
- Public holidays on 6 May (Ascension) and 17 May (Whit Monday) in Germany, France, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands; many people bridge Friday 7 May too.
- It is too early for high routes: the huts on the Tour du Mont Blanc and the Alta Via 1 mostly open from mid-June, and snow lingers on the passes.
- Traffic jams on the Alpine motorways on the Wednesday before and the Monday after each long weekend are routine; trains are the calmer option.
Travel window: 6 to 17 May 2027. Two long weekends ten days apart; German, Swiss, Austrian and Dutch travellers fill the Alps and the Italian lakes on both.
