Jewish holiday
Chanukah 2026
Eight nights of candles from 4 December, with Israel’s best winter hiking season in full swing.
4 to 12 December 2026
Why people travel then
Chanukah remembers the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem by the Maccabees in the second century BCE, and the oil that burned for eight days. Families light one more candle each night, eat doughnuts and fried foods, and in Israel the week is a school holiday, which makes it one of the year’s big family travel weeks.
December is also the start of the best hiking season in Israel’s south and in the Hula Valley, where tens of thousands of cranes spend the winter. Abroad, Chanukah 2026 overlaps the Christmas markets, and many Jewish communities in Europe light public menorahs in city squares.
What you will see on the routes
- Jerusalem: A Walk Through the Old City's Four Quarters
A giant menorah is lit at the Western Wall each evening, and in the Jewish Quarter families set their menorahs in glass boxes by the front door, so the lanes glow after dark.
- Mahane Yehuda and Nachlaot: The Shuk by Day and by Night
Mahane Yehuda’s bakeries compete over sufganiyot (filled doughnuts) all week; go in the morning before the queues.
- Agamon Hula — The Cranes of the Hula Valley
Early December is crane season at Agamon Hula: tens of thousands of cranes feed in the fields and fly out at sunrise. Book the morning wagon tour ahead during the school holiday.
- Haifa: The Baháʼí Terraces, the German Colony and Wadi Nisnas
Haifa’s Holiday of Holidays festival in December marks Chanukah and Christmas together in Wadi Nisnas, a few minutes from the foot of the Baháʼí terraces.
- Masada Snake Path: Sunrise Ascent to the Desert Fortress
The desert is at its best in December: the Snake Path at sunrise is cool, though the holiday week brings school groups and families, so start before dawn.
How it changes travel
- Chanukah is not a day of rest: shops, transport and sites run normally in Israel and abroad. Only the crowds change.
- Popular nature reserves can fill up during the school holiday; on busy days Israel’s Nature and Parks Authority asks visitors to book entry in advance at some sites.
- Desert hotels and Galilee guesthouses charge holiday rates for the week; the weekend of 11 to 12 December is the busiest.
Travel window: 4 to 13 December 2026. Israeli schools close for most of Chanukah, so nature reserves are busy every day, not only on the weekend.
