Begin at the marble temple honoring Abraham Lincoln at the Mall's western end, where a seated statue of the sixteenth president gazes out over the water. The Gettysburg Address is carved on the south wall, and the steps below mark where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his 1963 speech. Free and open at all hours; allow about 30 minutes.

The Lincoln Memorial is a U.S. national memorial honoring Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, located on the western end of the National Mall of Washington, D.C. The memorial is built in a neoclassical style in the form of a classical temple. The memorial's architect was Henry Bacon. In 1920, Daniel Chester French designed the large interior Abraham Lincoln statue, which was carved in marble by the Piccirilli brothers. Jules Guérin painted the interior murals, and the epitaph above the statue was written by Royal Cortissoz. Dedicated on May 30, 1922, it is one of several memorials built to honor an American president. It has been a major tourist attraction since its opening, and over the years, has occasionally been used as a symbolic center focused on race relations and civil rights.

Climb the gentle rise to the great marble obelisk, at about 555 feet the tallest structure in the city, built to honor George Washington. The grounds are free and always open; a timed ticket is needed to ride the elevator to the observation deck. Allow around 30 minutes on the grounds.

The Washington Monument is a 555-foot (169 m) tall obelisk on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to commemorate George Washington, a Founding Father of the United States and the nation's first president. Standing east of the Reflecting Pool and the Lincoln Memorial, the monument is made of bluestone gneiss for the foundation and of granite for the construction. The outside facing consists of three different kinds of white marble, as the building process was repeatedly interrupted. The monument stands 554 feet 7+11⁄32 inches (169.046 m) tall, according to U.S. National Geodetic Survey measurements in 2013 and 2014. It is the third tallest monumental column in the world, trailing only the Juche Tower in Pyongyang, and the San Jacinto Monument in Houston, Texas. It was the world's tallest structure between 1884 and 1889, after which it was overtaken by the Eiffel Tower, in Paris.

Reach the Mall's eastern end at Capitol Hill, seat of the United States Congress, its white dome closing the vista you have followed all day. The grounds are open to walk; interior tours are free but must be booked in advance through the visitor center. About 45 minutes around the grounds.

Loop north-west, along or near Pennsylvania Avenue, to end at the fence of the White House, the president's official residence since 1800. There is no walk-up entry, but the classic view of the north portico from Lafayette Square or the south lawn from the Ellipse is free and open. About 25 minutes of walking.
