Old Town is where Toronto began. The ten blocks laid out in 1793 as the Town of York sit just east of today’s financial towers, and this walk threads them from the Beaux-Arts hall of Union Station to the brick lanes of the Distillery District. It is a compact lesson in how the city grew rich: a railway station built as a temple, an office wedge commissioned by a whisky dynasty, a market in use since 1803, a cathedral rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1849, and finally the distillery itself, a walled town of Victorian industrial buildings where Gooderham and Worts grew into one of the largest distilleries in the world.

The pleasure is in the textures. The Gooderham Building’s copper-green prow framed against the glass towers down Front Street is one of the city’s most photographed views, and on its back wall a trompe-l’oeil mural plays tricks with the facade across the street. Berczy Park’s fountain is ringed by cast-iron dogs spouting water at a golden bone. Inside St. Lawrence Market, the smell of peameal bacon and fresh bread does most of the navigating.

It is about three and a half kilometres, almost all on sidewalks, and it works in any weather because the market, the cathedral and Union Station are all shelter.

Getting there. Start at Union Station, served by Line 1 of the subway, GO Transit trains, VIA Rail and the UP Express from Pearson Airport. From the Distillery District at the end, the 504A King streetcar leaves from the Distillery Loop and the 121 bus runs back toward Union.

Permits & tickets. None. The whole walk is free. The Distillery District has no admission, except during the Toronto Christmas Market, when weekend entry is ticketed; check the official site before you go and book ahead.

  1. Union Station's Great Hall 0.2 كم خريطة

Union Station, Front St W ← Union Station front steps

    Indoor station concourse

Begin inside. Union Station opened in 1927 and is Canada's busiest transportation hub, but the Great Hall still feels like a civic temple: about 76 metres long and 27 metres high, with a coffered ceiling and tall arched windows. Look up at the names of Canadian destinations carved below the cornice, then step out onto the Front Street colonnade, facing the Fairmont Royal York. Allow 10 minutes.

  2. Front Street to the Gooderham Building 0.9 كم خريطة

Union Station ← Gooderham Building and Berczy Park, Front St E at Wellington

    City sidewalks

Walk east along Front Street past the Hockey Hall of Fame corner at Yonge. Where Front and Wellington converge, the Gooderham Building, finished in 1892 for the distiller George Gooderham, fills the wedge like the bow of a ship. Walk round to Berczy Park behind it to see Derek Michael Besant's trompe-l'oeil mural on the back wall and the park's two-tier fountain, redesigned by Claude Cormier in 2017, where twenty-seven cast-iron dogs (and one cat, ignoring them) spout water toward a bone. The classic photo is from the west, looking along Front Street. About 15 minutes of walking.

  3. St. James Cathedral 0.3 كم خريطة

Berczy Park ← Cathedral Church of St. James, King St E at Church St

    City sidewalks

Two blocks north on Church Street is the Anglican cathedral, a parish since 1797. The current Gothic Revival building, by Frederick Cumberland and Thomas Ridout, opened in 1853 after the Great Fire of 1849 destroyed its predecessor. Its spire, completed in the 1870s, was for years the tallest structure in Canada. The cathedral's twelve change-ringing bells, installed in 1997, are among very few such peals in North America; if you hear them, stop. The gardens on the east side are a quiet place to sit. About 5 minutes of walking, 15 to look around.

  4. St. Lawrence Hall 0.3 كم خريطة

St. James Cathedral ← St. Lawrence Hall, King St E at Jarvis St

    City sidewalks

Continue east along King Street to St. Lawrence Hall, built in 1850 as the town's grand meeting hall, with a cupola and a Renaissance Revival front by William Thomas. Concerts, balls and political meetings filled it in the nineteenth century, and it is now a National Historic Site. The building is mostly used for events, so admire it from King Street, then turn south on Jarvis toward the market. About 5 minutes.

St. Lawrence Hall is a meeting hall in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, located at the corner of King Street East and Jarvis Street. It was created to be Toronto's public meeting hall home to public gatherings, concerts, and exhibitions. Its main feature was a thousand-seat ballroom. Today the hall continues as a venue for events including weddings, conferences, and art shows.

  5. St. Lawrence Market 0.2 كم خريطة

St. Lawrence Hall ← St. Lawrence Market, Front St E at Jarvis St

City sidewalks and indoor market halls

A market has stood here since 1803. The South Market building, which wraps around the city's 1845 City Hall, holds two floors of butchers, fishmongers, bakers and cheese counters, with the Market Gallery upstairs showing exhibits on the city's history. Across Front Street, the rebuilt North Market opened in 2025 and hosts the Saturday farmers' market and a Sunday antique market. Eat here: a peameal bacon sandwich, the Toronto classic, is sold at stalls in the South Market. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.

  6. East along Front Street to the Distillery District 1.4 كم خريطة

St. Lawrence Market ← Distillery District, 55 Mill St

City sidewalks, then brick-paved pedestrian lanes

Walk east on Front Street and turn south at Parliament Street toward Mill Street. The Distillery District covers about thirteen acres with more than forty heritage buildings on ten streets, the largest collection of Victorian-era industrial architecture in North America. Gooderham and Worts began distilling here in 1832; production ended in 1990, and the site reopened in 2003 as a pedestrian village deliberately free of chain stores. Wander the lanes between the stone mill, the tank houses and the old pure spirits building, now galleries, studios and places to eat and drink, including a brewpub, a chocolate maker and a sake brewery. About 20 minutes to walk there, and as long as you like once inside.
