Best time to go

  • Weekday, early

On summer weekends the trail can be a single-file queue and the outcrop is crowded. Start early on a weekday, or go on a clear winter day, when the trail is quieter and the mountains across Indian Arm may be dusted with snow.

Getting there

  • Leave the car behind

Parking in Deep Cove is tight, time-limited and paid in the busy season, and the lots are often full by mid-morning in summer. The bus from Phibbs Exchange drops you in the village, a short walk from the trailhead.

Gear & packing

  • Treat it as a real trail

Despite the short distance, the trail is rough, with roots, rocks and stairs that are slippery after rain. Wear hiking or trail shoes, not sandals, and carry water.

Safety

  • Stay back from the edge

The outcrop is open granite with steep drops to the water and no fences. Keep children close, keep dogs leashed, and don’t climb down towards the water.

Food

  • Doughnuts and coffee in the village

Deep Cove’s small main street, Gallant Avenue, has cafés, a doughnut shop that is a post-hike tradition for many locals, and casual restaurants. Expect lines on summer weekends.

Local insights

  • Add a paddle

Kayak and stand-up paddleboard rental shops operate on the Deep Cove waterfront in the warmer months. Paddling along the shore of Indian Arm after the hike gives you the view from the water. Book ahead on summer weekends.

With kids

  • Good for active school-age kids

The trail is short enough for active children, who usually enjoy the scramble over roots. It is not stroller-friendly. Deep Cove Park at the end has a playground and a beach.

Where to stay

  • North Vancouver or downtown

Deep Cove has almost no hotels. Stay in North Vancouver near Lonsdale Quay, about 30 minutes away by car or longer by bus, or downtown and make a half-day trip.
