Kiyomizu-dera

  • It opens at 6am — arrive with the temple, not the tour buses

The temple opens far earlier than most Kyoto sights and closes in the early evening (later during special illumination periods), so a 6-7am start gets the wooden stage and the hillside view without the midday crowds that build up through Higashiyama.

Sannenzaka & Ninenzaka

  • Watch for a 'no photos' sign before you raise your phone

About half the shops and teahouses along these preserved lanes post a no-photography notice inside; where there’s no sign it’s generally fine, but it’s still good form to ask a shopkeeper first rather than assume. The lanes themselves are public streets and free to photograph.

Gion, on the way to Maruyama Park

  • Don't chase, touch or corner a geiko or maiko for a photo

If a geiko or apprentice maiko passes on a main route, photographing quietly from a respectful distance is accepted; Kyoto now fines photography taken on Gion’s private side alleys specifically, and the district generally asks visitors to observe rather than crowd or follow.
