Kennedy Space Center: A Day at America's Spaceport

This is an active spaceport and launches are frequent. If one aligns with your trip, build your visit around it — and expect the biggest crowds of the year on those days.

Cooler weather makes the Rocket Garden and the bus queue pleasant instead of punishing. In summer, plan the outdoor pieces for the morning before the near-daily afternoon thunderstorms.

Standard admission covers the bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center. Book ahead online, and look at the special-access tours if you want to get closer to the pads or the Vehicle Assembly Building.

The bus tour is the heart of the visit and its line builds by late morning. Board it right after opening, then work back through Atlantis and the Rocket Garden in the afternoon.

With a car this works perfectly as a day trip from an Orlando base; there is no reason to move hotels for it. The exception is a launch: launch-chasers stay in Cocoa Beach to be close when schedules slip, as they often do.

There is nothing walkable outside the gates — the complex sits inside a wildlife refuge. Plan on the on-site cafés, and note there is food at the Apollo/Saturn V Center too, so you need not rush the bus tour back for lunch.

The shuttle launch simulator, the slide under Atlantis and the play areas keep younger kids going, and the daily astronaut talks land surprisingly well with them. The Saturn V impresses every age.

From Orlando take the SR 528 toll road east to Merritt Island — roughly an hour without traffic. Make sure your rental car has a toll transponder arrangement; parking is at the complex.

The spaceport shares Merritt Island with a national wildlife refuge. From the tour bus you will often spot alligators in the canals and bald eagles on the nests along the road — the drivers usually point them out.
