Autumn colour Japan
Autumn leaves, Nikko
In autumn the mountains around Nikko turn red, orange and gold, starting high around Lake Chuzenji and moving down toward the town's famous shrines. The hairpin bends of the Irohazaka road lead up to Kegon Falls, while lakeside trails and the Senjogahara marshland boardwalk offer easy, level walking through the colour. Go on a weekday if you can, as roads into the hills fill quickly at weekends.
