Waterfront Station ← Water Street and Carrall Street
Brick-paved street
Water Street is Gastown's main drag, lined with brick warehouses, shops and restaurants. At the corner of Cambie stands the steam clock, built in 1977 by horologist Raymond Saunders over a vent of the downtown steam heating system. Despite the Victorian styling it is modern, and since 1986 an electric motor has kept the time, but steam still blows its whistles for the quarter-hour chimes. About 20 minutes.

Only a few functioning steam clocks exist, most designed and built by Canadian horologist Raymond Saunders for display in urban public spaces. Steam clocks by other makers are installed in St Helier, Jersey and at the Chelsea Farmers' Market in London, England.

Water Street and Carrall Street ← Hotel Europe, Powell Street
Cobbled square
This small square is where Gastown began, close to where Gassy Jack opened his saloon in 1867. His statue stood here until protesters pulled it down in 2022. Across the square rises the Hotel Europe, a narrow flatiron building of 1908–1909 on a triangular lot, the first reinforced-concrete structure in Canada. About 15 minutes.

Hotel Europe is a six-storey heritage building located at 43 Powell Street in the Gastown area of Vancouver, British Columbia. The building was commissioned by hotelier Angelo Calori and built in 1908-1909 by Parr and Fee Architects. Situated on a triangular lot, the building is designed in the flatiron style. It was the first reinforced concrete structure to be built in Canada and the earliest fireproof hotel in Western Canada. Contractors had to be brought in from Cincinnati, Ohio for the necessary expertise; the Ferro-Concrete Construction Company began this project six years after constructing the first tall concrete building in the world.

Pender Street and Carrall Street ← Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden
Garden paths
End at the first Chinese garden built outside Asia, opened in April 1986 and designed with experts from Suzhou in the style of a Ming-dynasty scholar's garden. Craggy rocks, a jade-green pond, covered walkways and framed windows make a single city block feel far larger than it is. The free public park next door shares the pond and is a quiet place to sit when you are done. About 45 minutes.
