Four days is the right length for a first visit to Toronto: enough to do the famous things well, see the islands and the neighbourhoods, and still give a full day to Niagara Falls. Canada’s biggest city is built on Lake Ontario, cut through by green ravines, and made of distinct neighbourhoods; the best of it is on foot, between the sights.

The shape is simple. Day 1 is the old town and the skyline: the St. Lawrence Market and Distillery District, the Hockey Hall of Fame, then the CN Tower and Ripley’s Aquarium side by side. Day 2 is the lake: the Harbourfront, then the ferry to the Toronto Islands for the skyline view. Day 3 is uptown and downtown culture: the Royal Ontario Museum, Casa Loma, then Kensington Market, Chinatown and Queen West for the evening. Day 4 is Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

If you have more time or different interests, swap in a nature day. Scarborough Bluffs are the city’s great cliffs over the lake; the Don Valley and Evergreen Brick Works is a ravine walk into a converted brickyard; High Park and the Humber Bay Arch Bridge is at its best in cherry blossom season; and Rouge National Urban Park is a national park inside the city limits, glorious in October.

Getting there. UP Express connects Toronto Pearson airport to Union Station in about 25 minutes. Union is also the hub for the subway, GO trains and VIA Rail.

Tickets. Book the CN Tower, Ripley’s Aquarium and the Niagara boat ahead in summer; check each official site for current prices and hours.

اليوم 1

Old Toronto, the Hall and the Tower

Start with breakfast at St. Lawrence Market and walk the old town east to the Victorian brick lanes of the Distillery District, the route in St. Lawrence Market and the Distillery District. Head back west along Front Street to Brookfield Place for the Hockey Hall of Fame and the Stanley Cup. In the afternoon walk down to the CN Tower, ideally timed so you are on top for the late light, and pair it with Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada next door, which is at its calmest in the evening.

اليوم 2

The lake and the islands

Walk the waterfront from Union Station west along Queens Quay, following the Harbourfront walk past the galleries, docks and boardwalks. By late morning take the ferry from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and spend the rest of the day on the Toronto Islands loop: Centre Island, the beaches of Ward’s and Hanlan’s, and the lagoons, on foot or by rented bike. Stay for sunset, then take a late ferry back with the skyline lit up in front of you.

اليوم 3

Museum, castle and the neighbourhoods

Be at the Royal Ontario Museum when it opens and give it the whole morning: dinosaurs, the Chinese galleries and the crystal-shaped extension on Bloor Street. After lunch in Yorkville, ride the subway north to Dupont and climb the Baldwin Steps to Casa Loma, the Edwardian castle on the hill. In the late afternoon head down to Kensington Market, Chinatown and Queen West for vintage shops, street art on Graffiti Alley and dinner on Queen West.

اليوم 4

Niagara Falls

Take an early GO train from Union Station or drive the QEW for the day described in the Niagara Falls day trip: the brink of the Horseshoe Falls at Table Rock, the boat into the mist, Journey Behind the Falls, then north along the Niagara Parkway to Queenston Heights and the wineries and streets of Niagara-on-the-Lake. Be back in Toronto for a late dinner.
