Disney Springs: The Free Evening at Disney World

Disney Springs wakes up when the parks wind down. Late afternoon into the night is the whole point — daytime here is mostly shopping in the heat. Weeknights are far calmer than weekends.

There is no admission and no park reservation to worry about, and parking in the garages is free. What does need booking: tables at the popular restaurants and seats for Cirque du Soleil’s ‘Drawn to Life’.

Hotels around Lake Buena Vista put you a short drive — or a boat ride from some Disney resorts — from the Springs, and make it an easy every-evening habit. International Drive is the classic cheaper base if you have a car and are splitting time with Universal.

The waterfront Landing district holds the destination restaurants, The BOATHOUSE first among them. The range across the Springs runs from quick counter food to proper fine dining, which is exactly why locals treat it as Orlando’s dining district and not just a Disney annex.

The LEGO Store’s outdoor brick sculptures and build tables, and the sheer scale of World of Disney, will absorb kids for an hour without a single ticket. The amphicars at The BOATHOUSE are worth watching launch even if you never ride one.

Drivers come off I-4 straight into the free multi-storey garages. Disney resort guests can use the bus network, and several nearby Disney resorts connect by boat — the nicest arrival of all.

The Aerophile tethered balloon flies only in calm weather and pauses for wind and storms, which in a Florida summer means afternoons are unreliable. If the basket is up and the line is short, take the ride then, not later.
