Typhoon Lagoon: Disney's Shipwreck Water Park

Disney's castaway-themed water park, built around one of the largest wave pools in the world — with the shipwrecked Miss Tilly stranded on the mountain above it all.

Typhoon Lagoon runs on a single joke, told well: a great typhoon once tore through a tropical resort town, and the park is the wreckage. Surfboards are speared through roofs, fishing nets hang where they landed, and the shrimp boat Miss Tilly sits impaled on the peak of Mount Mayday, where she periodically fires a geyser of water into the sky. Disney built the place in 1989 and the storytelling has aged better than most theme parks’ headline rides.

The anchor is the Surf Pool — one of the largest wave pools in the world, and not a gentle one. At intervals the machinery at the back releases a genuine breaking wave that rolls the length of the lagoon while the whole pool screams. Around it, Castaway Creek drifts a slow circle of the entire park; Mount Mayday drops body slides and raft runs off its slopes; and Crush ‘n’ Gusher, a water coaster that pushes rafts uphill as well as down, covers the thrill end. Ketchakiddee Creek scales it all down for the smallest kids.

How a day flows. Be at the gate for opening and go straight up for Crush ‘n’ Gusher and the Mount Mayday slides — they build the longest lines of the day within the first hour. Give the late morning to the Surf Pool, drift Castaway Creek when you need to cool your pulse rather than raise it, and expect a mid-afternoon interruption: Florida’s summer thunderstorms close the slides temporarily almost daily, and the park simply reopens them when the lightning passes.

A loop through the castaway town: thrill slides first, then the wave pool, with the lazy river as the connective tissue.

  1. Typhoon Lagoon Surf Pool 0.8 km خريطة

Main entrance ← Surf Pool lagoon

Sand beach and paved pool deck

The heart of the park and one of the largest wave pools in the world — a full lagoon with a sand beach, where the machinery periodically releases a genuine breaking wave that rolls its whole length. Above it, the shrimp boat Miss Tilly sits shipwrecked on the peak of Mount Mayday, firing a geyser skyward at intervals. Bodysurf the big waves or just stand chest-deep and take the hit.

  2. Castaway Creek 0.7 km خريطة

Surf Pool beach ← Full circuit of the park

    Lazy river, multiple entry points

A slow lazy river that circles the entire park, drifting under bridges, through a rain grotto and past the wreckage-strewn scenery. Multiple entry points mean you can use it as transport as much as relaxation. This is the between-slides recovery lap — one full circuit is the best way to see the whole park's theming.

  3. Crush 'n' Gusher & the Mount Mayday slides 0.8 km خريطة

Hideaway Bay ← Mount Mayday summit paths

    Stairs and paved slide paths

The thrill corner. Crush 'n' Gusher is a water coaster themed as a ruined fruit-packing plant — water jets push the rafts uphill as well as down, which no ordinary slide does. Behind it, Mount Mayday drops the classic body slides and raft runs off its slopes. Do all of this first thing; the lines here define your day.

  4. Ketchakiddee Creek & the family areas 0.7 km خريطة

    Mount Mayday ← Ketchakiddee Creek

    Shallow water playground, paved paths

The park scaled down for the smallest visitors: mini slides, fountains, shallow wading water and a small-scale version of the castaway theming. Parents trade shifts here while older kids run the mountain. The nearby family raft slides bridge the gap for mixed-age groups.
