Blizzard Beach: The Ski Resort That Melted

Disney typically keeps only one of its two water parks open through the cooler months, rotating refurbishments between Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon. Confirm Blizzard Beach is the one operating before you plan the day.

Arrive at opening: the morning is the coolest, clearest window, and Florida’s near-daily summer thunderstorms tend to shut the slides temporarily in the afternoon. Waiting out the rain beats leaving — the park reopens noticeably emptier.

Water park admission is separate from the four big Disney parks, sold on its own or as an add-on option to Walt Disney World tickets. Buy online ahead of your visit and check whether a reservation is required that day.

Go straight to the top of Mount Gushmore at opening and ride Summit Plummet and Slush Gusher back to back — their lines are stairs in full sun and grow all morning. The chairlift is charming but slow; when the queue for it builds, the stairs are faster.

A Disney-area hotel around Lake Buena Vista makes a water-park day easy — short hop there, quick retreat when everyone is waterlogged. International Drive works as the cheaper base with a car, especially if the trip mixes Disney with Universal and SeaWorld.

Tike’s Peak is the whole melting-ski-resort joke rebuilt at toddler scale, with shallow water and mini slides. For mixed ages, Teamboat Springs is the equalizer — one of the longest family raft rides anywhere, and everyone from six to sixty rides the same boat.

The climb up Mount Gushmore is long and the pavement bakes — water shoes save the day, and waterproof sunscreen needs reapplying constantly since the water strips it. Reflective water burns even on overcast days.

Towels and lockers are rentable inside, but bringing your own towel and a waterproof phone pouch skips a queue. Stake out chairs near the base of the mountain early — shade is the scarcest resource in the park.
