Islands of Adventure is the ride park. Where Universal Studios Florida next door is built around movie sets and screens, this park — consistently ranked among the best theme parks in the world — is built around hardware: the resort’s biggest coasters, its best water rides and its most ambitious dark rides, arranged as themed islands around a central lagoon. The layout is a simple loop, which makes planning honest: pick a direction at Port of Entry and commit.

Two things anchor the day. The VelociCoaster in the Jurassic Park island is widely rated among the best coasters in the United States — a low-slung, brutally fast Jurassic World launch coaster over the lagoon — and Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure in Hogsmeade is the resort’s most loved family coaster, a story-driven motorbike run through the Forbidden Forest. Both build queues that outlast lunch, so one of them opens your day.

How the day flows. Rope-drop Hagrid’s or the VelociCoaster, whichever matters more to you, then run the loop clockwise: The Incredible Hulk Coaster and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man on Marvel Super Hero Island while it is still morning, then Toon Lagoon — and understand that Toon Lagoon is not a splash zone, it is a dunking: Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls and the Popeye barge will soak you to the skin, so ride them back to back in the midday heat and dry off over lunch. The afternoon belongs to Jurassic Park and Skull Island — the River Adventure drop, Kong in his cave — before Hogsmeade delivers the finale: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey inside a full-scale Hogwarts castle whose queue is itself a tour of the school. End in Seuss Landing as the light goes soft; its curved candy architecture with no straight lines is the gentlest landing the resort has.

The Hogwarts Express connects Hogsmeade to Universal Studios Florida for park-to-park ticket holders — board at the far end of the island.
Summer thunderstorms close the coasters temporarily; the indoor rides carry the rain hour.

The entry island is a bazaar of no particular country — Venetian, Moroccan, Southeast Asian details piled into one trading-port street. It is shops and food rather than rides, which makes it the place to move fast at opening and linger on the way out. The lighthouse at the gate is the park's landmark.

Port of Entry → Captain America Diner

Comic-book architecture at full volume, patrolled by costumed heroes on quad bikes. The Incredible Hulk Coaster opens with a launched climb that sets the tone for the whole park, and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man remains a landmark dark ride two decades on — 3D screens and physical sets fused so well it still fools your eyes. Doctor Doom's freefall towers round out the island.

Marvel Super Hero Island → Sweet Haven wharf

Newspaper-comic-strip streets hiding the park's two great soakers: Dudley Do-Right's Ripsaw Falls, a flume with a drop that buries the boat, and Popeye & Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges, a circular raft ride on which staying dry is not on the menu. You will get soaked — that is the deal. Ride both in the hottest hour and count it as air conditioning.

Toon Lagoon → Jurassic Park Discovery Center

Through the famous gates into the park's largest island. The VelociCoaster is the headliner — a Jurassic World launch coaster hugging the lagoon, widely rated among the best coasters in the United States — while the River Adventure ends in the drop everyone remembers and Skull Island: Reign of Kong runs expedition trucks through a cave of very large problems. The Discovery Center is the quiet air-conditioned refuge.

Jurassic Park → Hogwarts castle

A snow-capped village crouched under a full-scale Hogwarts. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is the resort's best-loved coaster — sidecar motorbikes through the Forbidden Forest — and Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey flies through the castle itself, with a queue that tours Dumbledore's office and the talking portraits on the way. Hogsmeade → Port of Entry

The last island has no straight lines — every building, lamppost and palm curves the way Theodor Geisel drew them. The Cat in the Hat dark ride, the High in the Sky trolley along the rooftops and the One Fish Two Fish spinner are all gentle, which is exactly what the end of this day calls for. Cross back into Port of Entry to close the loop.
