Best time to go

  • Open the doors, or the last two hours

The first hour after opening and the last stretch before closing are the calm windows. Late morning on weekends, school holidays and any rainy summer day are when the galleries fill. On a clear day, do the seawall first and let the aquarium be your afternoon shelter if it clouds over.

Getting there

  • Bus 19 or the seawall

The 19 bus runs from downtown to the Stanley Park loop, a few minutes’ walk away. The nicer approach is on foot or by bike along the seawall from Coal Harbour, past the totem poles at Brockton Point if you go the long way round. Park pay parking is valid across the park’s lots, so one ticket covers a drive-and-walk day.

Tickets & reservations

  • Book a dated ticket online

Tickets are sold for a specific date and prices move with demand, so the cheapest days are usually quiet weekdays. Buy on the aquarium’s own website and check the current hours, which change by season.

Beating the lines

  • Plan around the feeding times

The otter and sea lion sessions pull everyone outdoors at once, which empties the indoor galleries. Check the day’s schedule when you arrive: see the outdoor animals at their session, then head straight for the octopus and the jellies while everyone else is outside.

With kids

  • The best-sized aquarium for small children

It is compact enough that nobody melts down between galleries. The touch pool on the Wild Coast, the sea otters and the Amazon room carry most kids, and the Canaccord Exploration Gallery near the end has the jellies, the 4D theatre and a play area. Strollers work throughout.

Where to stay

  • The West End and Coal Harbour

The West End and Coal Harbour are the closest neighbourhoods to Stanley Park, a walk from the aquarium and the seawall, with English Bay a few blocks away. Downtown hotels near Burrard or Waterfront stations are a short bus or bike ride away and better for the rest of the city.

Food

  • Eat in the park, or back in the West End

There is food service inside, and the park has cafés and concession stands near the main attractions in season. For a proper meal, Denman Street at the edge of the West End is a short walk out of the park and full of casual options.

Local insights

  • Read the rescue story at the Wild Coast

Several of the animals on display came through rescue programs, including sea otters stranded as pups and judged unable to survive in the wild. The Marine Mammal Rescue program treats injured and stranded seals and sea lions every year, and the signage at the outdoor pools tells those stories. It changes how you watch the animals.

Smart savings

  • Consider a membership or a combo if you will return

If you are in Vancouver for a week with children, a membership can pay for itself in two visits; compare it with the single-ticket price for your dates. Some multi-attraction passes also include the aquarium, but only buy one if you would visit the other attractions anyway.
